Every election, the political parties and their candidates do not fail to bring up Mao river bridge. This time, too, both DNT and DPT candidates of Gelegphu constituency pledged to build a bridge over Mao river.
All the grand campaign promises made in the past elections turned out to be nothing but lip service. Whether the pledge would be followed through this time or not remains to be seen.
But for now, the candidates sounded convincing in their resolve and conviction to see it through as they shared their respective parties’ plans at the constituency debate last week.
And the people of Gelegphu constituency, despite the past experiences, have not given up their hopes.
“Once again, the parties are saying they will build a bridge over Mao river. Now, I don’t know how serious they are or when they intend to do it, but having a bridge over the river will definitely benefit us immensely,” Gyembo from Umling said.
“Whoever comes to power must keep their word. Seeing a bridge built over Mao river would be a dream come true of many of us,” Dorji Wangdi from Taraythang.
Sangay Namgay from Umling said the bridge would save them a lot of troubles. It would make their visits to hospital easier.
“We often fail to get timely health checkup because we miss the public transport service to Gelegphu. Also, we have to spend a night in Gelephu every time we visit the hospital. If there is a bridge, we can go in the morning and return home in the evening,” Sangay Namgay said.
For about eight thousand five hundred people of the four gewogs located across the Moa River in Gelegphu, the lack of a bridge over the river is a real struggle.
Every monsoon, the river swells leaving the people in four gewogs almost cut off from the rest of the country.They rely on public transport service to get in and out of their villages in the summer.
A bridge over the river would mean the travel time to Gelegphu would be shortened by half, which will save them both time and cost.
