The Chhukha District Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man from Tsirang to nine years in prison for raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl. The man was found guilty of a rape of a child above 12 years of age.

The judgement passed on the 6th of this month, also ordered him to pay a monthly child support of Nu 750 per month.

The child support has to be paid until the child, who is now four months old, turns 18.

The judgement also asked the convict to pay Nu 37,500 separately to the victim in compensation within three months from the day of judgement.

The man raped the girl in December last year in Mokoibari, Chhukha. The victim hitched a ride with him in his truck when the man raped her.

The man confessed to the crime.

According to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act of Bhutan 2011, a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of the rape of a child above twelve years, if the defendant commits any act of sexual intercourse against a child between the ages of 12 to 18 years.
