A 36-year-old man was killed and seven other family members injured when a bolt of lightning struck a home in Samtse, yesterday.
The incident took place at Khandrothang, locally known as Mecheytar. The family members had sat down for dinner at around 7:30 PM, when the lightning struck.
Among the injured are children between the age of five and 12. They are being treated for slight injuries on their face and hands from the splinter from the wooden pole in the kitchen the lightning had ripped apart.
The health officials said they will be discharged after their blood reports and other examination come through. The auntie of the deceased also sustained minor injury. She said she and her granddaughters have difficulty in hearing after the incident.
The wife of the deceased has been referred to Phuentsholing Hospital after her condition did not show any sign of improvement.
The deceased is survived by five children, the youngest being five years old.

Meanwhile, His Majesty’s Kidu office has provided the bereaved family with a semso of ten thousand ngultrum.
Lightning has caused deaths in Samtse in the past as well.
