The man stuck inside a tipper truck earlier this morning has been rescued. Before the rescue, the tripper he was driving was swamped by a mudslide along the Wangduephodrang highway. The mudslide was triggered by heavy rainfall yesterday.
The Road Safety and Transport Authority base in-charge in Thimphu, Ngawang Gyeltshen, said the driver is undergoing a treatment at the National Referral hospital.
The rain-triggered mudslide that cut off a section of the highway has also stranded hundreds of vehicles. A falling tree also damaged two Hilux and a taxi. One Santa fe, a land cruiser and a DCM truck were also damaged after were covered by the mudslide in Lamperi.
No casualties have been reported.
“We are not sure when the traffic can resume. We have deployed a dozer and people from the Department of roads to clear the road,” said Ngawang Gyeltshen. He said their effort to clear the road is being foiled because of continuous and heavy downpour.
Meanwhile, the public transport and movement of vehicles towards Wangdue have been halted until tomorrow.
