A 60-year-old man was abducted at gunpoint from his neighbour’s house in Gakidling under Sarpang Dzongkhag.
At around 6:30 pm yesterday, a group of men barged into the house and forcefully took Dorji away. Dorji had just arrived at the neighbour’s house, who is also his relative.
Dorji’s wife, Sangay Dema, son Sangay Norbu and his neighbour’s wife and their children were all present during the time of incident. While the children managed to escape, Dorji was held at gunpoint.
Sangay Dema, 50, said they tried to fight back but were outnumbered. “They kicked us and hit us with the gun,” she said. She sustained injuries on her forehead and left arm.
The neighbour’s wife said they begged the abductors to let Dorji go and that they will pay any amount of money they demand. “They didn’t listen. While they were taking Dorji away Sangay Dema screamed for help but no one came to the rescue,” she said.
Upon hearing Sangay Dema’s cry for help, another neighbour, Sherab, did come out to help. Sherab said he ran after them but they fired a shot at him and took Dorji across the border which is just below the house.
The abductors have left behind a Khukhuri (curved knife) and four wooden staffs.
Dorji is a Gomchen. He came with his family to live in Gakidling from Kurote six years ago under resettlement programme.
The wife and children of Dorji are all shocked and traumatized. Sangay Dema has been hospitalized.
