The Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley on behalf of the government and the people, extended greetings and felicitations to India’s newly elected President, Pranab Mukherjee. Pranab Mukherjee, a veteran of the ruling Congress Party, was elected by members of the national and state parliaments on Sunday.
The Former Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has taken office as the country’s 13th President. He was sworn in by Chief Justice S.H Kapadia at the central hall of parliament in the Indian capital, New Delhi. Pranab Mukherjee’s term runs for five years. He replaces Pratibha Patil, who was India’s first woman president.
Congratulating the newly elected President on behalf of the government and the people, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y. Thinley said the culmination of Pranab Mukherjee’s most illustrious political career in India’s highest office is reaffirmation of the trust and confidence of the government and people of India in his wisdom and leadership and a tribute to his long and distinguished service to India.
Lyonchhoen wished President Pranab Mukherjee success in discharge of his duties and said the President’s persoFal and abiding goodwill towards Bhutan and its people will strengthen the enduring ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Pranab Mukherjee has led several top government ministries during his career, including the foreign, home, defence and trade ministries. The swearing in function was attended by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the cabinet ministers among others.
