Beekeeping is now expected to be more convenient and profitable for a group of farmers in Langchenphu, Samdrup Jongkhar. This is following the training they attended recently on modern techniques of beekeeping.
Farmers now rear bees in box-shaped artificial hives made of wood. Inside, several frames are hung on which the honeycombs are built.
Prior to the training, beekeepers used logs as beehives and extracting honey from it was difficult.
“In the conventional method of using logs, bees used to die while extracting honey. But in the new method, not a single bee is harmed and the honey we get is equally pure,” said Ganesh Shyam Kharka.
“The modern method is easier for us and safer for the bees as well,” said Lakshman.
The new technique, according to the farmers, will help boost honey production. This will translate to increased income.
“Through the old method, we were able to harvest honey only once in a year. But now, because of the different layers inside, we will be able to harvest honey after every three to four months. Now, getting three litres of honey is just a matter of two to three months. Before, it took us a year,” added Ganesh Shyam Kharka.
As of now, more than 15 beekeepers from Langchenphu have adopted the new technique. The dzongkhag livestock sector conducted the training.
