The Indian Community in Thimphu observed 68th Independence Day at the Indian Embassy this morning. The function began with the hoisting of the Indian Flag.
The Gyalpoi Zimpon offered Tashi Khadar to the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Gautam Bambawale.
The Indian Ambassador then, read out the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s address to the Nation, which was delivered on the eve of the Independence Day.
It was on this day, in 1947, that India became an independent nation. Her struggle for independence began in 1857. Later in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organisations under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi launched a nationwide independence movement. Colonial powers were then transferred to India on 15th August, 1947.
