A small village in Bumthang now has a new improved version of traditional community-based watermill. Instead of traditional wooden turbine, the new watermill has a modified turbine with steel blade.
Dazur village under Tang gewog has 16 households.
The mill was inaugurated by the agriculture minister, Dr. Pema Gyamtsho. Lyonpo said the traditional community-based watermill is a simple example of clean development mechanism. “It is going to benefit the local economy.”
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests also has plans to support renovation of watermills across the country.
The renovation and modification of watermill was funded by the Global Environment Facility Agency under United Nations Development Programs.
