Monggar Dzongkhag’s court is likely to have the highest matrimonial cases registered in the country. Most of the cases, the district court receives, are to do with marriages, divorces, and domestic issues. About 5-10 cases are registered with the court every day and most of them are matrimonial cases.
The Monggar Drangpon, Gembo Dorji, said many cases have their origin in extramarital affairs. “Extramarital affairs are the most prominent and dominating issue in the cases we receive. Many cases have husbands betraying their wives and there are a few cases of wife who wants to divorce their husbands.”
The Drangpon also said alcohol is yet another reason which adds to the number of divorce cases. He also said mobile phone and internet are also playing a role in raising the number of matrimonial cases.
The court hears about 10 cases a day. There are about 400 including 20 government cases registered with the court so far.
