Local leaders in Wangdue Phodrang say harvesting raw materials to make traditional wooden bowls (Dapa) and cups has huge impact on the environment. During the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdue they requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests to stop issuing permits to collect the raw materials.
The Nahi Gup, Karpo Dorji, highlighted that such activities have affected their water sources. “It is very difficult for us to control,” he said.
The Gup added that the permits issued by the ministry doesn’t specify areas to collect the raw materials.
“People in the villages complain that some come to collect the raw materials even at night,” said Sonam Dorji, the Gup of Dangchhu Gewog. “After getting the permit, they collect everywhere and it might lead to problems. If it is possible it would be better if the government could stop issuing permit.”
However, the Dzongkhag Forestry Officer , Chencho Dukpa, said it will not be appropriate to stop issuing permits as some people depend on such business for their livelihood.
“Many people earn through harvesting these raw materials to make wooden products. Most people in the east earn and make their living through this. We also need to preserve our own culture,” said the officer.
The officer added that the Dzongkhag had no authority to do so.
