The Green Bhutan Project was launched in the capital, today, by the Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay. It comes exactly a month after the launch of Clean Bhutan Project.
The Green Bhutan project seeks to make Bhutan greener than it already is. The project aims to plant flowers and trees in all towns across the country. It also aspires to foster a culture of planting trees among the citizens.
Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay and the gathering planted trees near the Thimphu City Gate to launch the Green Bhutan Project.
The Ministers of Agriculture and Health, the JICA Country Representative, and other officials were also present.
The project is dedicated to the 60th Birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, which is next year.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Integrated Agriculture Technology Farm at Wang Sisina this morning. About 28 acres of dry and rugged government land close to the highway has been developed into arable land.
About 85 plots, each measuring 10 decimals, have been allotted to the civil servants and corporate employees. The allotment was done on lucky dip basis for those working in Thimphu.
Those who got the plots will grow organic vegetables using modern farming practices for one year. Facilities such as irrigation water supply, green houses for nursery and power tillers among others will be available at the site. One of the objectives of the initiative is to encourage civil servants to grow their own food and produce surplus vegetable for sale.
It is an initiative between Thimphu Dzongkhag Agriculture sector and SNV Bhutan.
