The Gelegphu Lower Secondary School will be downgraded to a Primary School by 2020. This was decided in the recent Thromde Tshogde.
In the meeting, the Gelegphu thromde education officer Kuenzang proposed to downgrade the lower secondary school by phase-wise.
He reasoned that the school is faced with a shortage of classrooms, with 40 to 45 students in each section.
“With overcrowded classrooms, it is difficult for students to learn. As per the education policy, if we downgrade the school, we will be able to focus on the quality of education. By the academic year 2019, we are planning to keep only one section in Class VIII.”
The Gelegphu Thromde said that proposal to downgrade the lower secondary school is reasonable, as there is already a middle secondary school in the Thromde.
“If the nearby school is well equipped and have the capacity to accommodate the students, the lower school can be downgraded,” Tikaram Kafley, the Gelegphu Thrompon, said.
“The Thromde has also given consent of keeping only a section in class VIII by next year. Other students of the same class will be transferred to the middle secondary school.”
The Gelegphu Lower Secondary School has 1,372 students with 69 teachers.
