From providing clean drinking water to enough irrigation water, the De-Suung National Service Water Project has come as a blessing to many villagers. This time, the residents of Tashichhoeling village in Sarpang are reaping the benefit of the project. About 10 acres of land which were left fallow are being revived.
It has been almost a decade since eight households of Tashichhoeling village left their land fallow. But others in the village relied on rainfall for paddy cultivation. Thanks to the water project, from this year, the farmers can irrigate the land on time.
“In the past, we couldn’t cultivate paddy due to water shortage. But this year, we are hoping that we can cultivate and earn some cash,” said Sonam Chogay, a farmer.
“The water project was completed last year after the paddy cultivation season. So, we couldn’t cultivate the paddy last year. However, it benefitted us as we could grow vegetables,” said Pema Chezom, another farmer.
With the revival of the fallow land, farmers hope to reduce the dependency on imported rice.
The irrigation water is connected from the Singyechhu water source, which is about two kilometres away. The water project was completed in September last year.
