Housing shortage has become a major problem for the staff of Dagachhu Hydropower Corporation. The construction of quarters, which started in September 2010, is still not ready.
The work was contracted out to Damchu Construction.
The houses were supposed to be ready by 2011 but the contractor failed to meet the deadline. The constructions were finally completed in June last year and were handed over to the project.
But even before the staff could move into the new houses, cracks were noticed on a four unit building. Following this, the contractor was asked to fix the faults. And the rectification works are still not over. Similar cracks were also noticed on a six unit building even before it was handed over to the project.
There are 96 people working with Dagachhu Hydropower Corporation. The project Chief Executive Officer, however, says the staff quarters when completed can accommodate only 55 of them. But at least when half of them move into the quarters, the housing crunch in the area would be eased to a great extent.
