Like an old saying goes, make hay while the sun shines, the scene at the taxi stand in Thimphu couldn’t be more apt. Much to the exasperation of passengers travelling to Punakha and Wangduephodrang, the fare has escalated overnight to Nu.500 per head. It used to cost Nu.250 otherwise.
The exorbitant rise in the fare was brought about by the increase in the number to people travelling to the two Dzongkhags to attend Pel Dechog Khorlo Dompai Wangchen which is to begin on Thursday.

“The taxi drivers are taking advantage of the situation,” said one of the travellers. It is a shame, some said. Others said they will not be able to afford that kind of money.
A few taxi drivers, who did not wish to be named, say the hike is rational. They said they would not find a passenger while returning to Thimphu from Punakha and Wangduephodrang.

But the Road Safety and Transport Authority officials said aggrieved passengers should write a complaint letter to the authority so that action against such taxi drivers can be taken.
