The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) extended the postal ballot registration deadline for the Local Government Elections until the 10th of this month. The registration which was supposed to end yesterday was extended in view of the COVID-19 situation in the country.
“The reason why we extended the registration is because of the current COVID situation. We want to reduce the number of people visiting voting centres and reduce the risk of COVID. If people use the postal ballot service, they don’t have to gather and crowd. If there is an outbreak again, it would cause many problems,” said Phub Dorji, the Director of Secretariat Services with the ECB.
Meanwhile, about 118,000 eligible voters registered for the postal ballot services as of yesterday.
