Druk Stars FC is the champions of the Pepsi Super League 2019. They defeated High Quality United FC 6-4 in the finals played yesterday. Bhutan Pepsi Super League previously known as Thimphu League is one of the top division of football in the country.
With the motive to win the first edition of the Pepsi Super League, the two side came face to face at the Changlimithang National Stadium. Druk Star FC, one of the strongest teams of the campaign opened the scoreline first with Samten Norbu heading in a beautiful cross at the 28th minute of the first half.
However, Druk Star failed to retain their lead as High Quality FC’s centre forward Vickey made it all square by scoring in the dying minutes of the first half.
Making constant attacks, High Quality United FC kept their opponent on their toes in the second half. High Quality United FC succeeded in their efforts as Tenzin Namgay, a defender converted a beautiful set piece into a goal in the 58th minute. Tenzin Thinley further added on to their opponents’ dismay by extending the lead by two goals.
Just when everyone thought it was all over, Druk Star FC’s Nigerian striker Busayo, gave his side hope by scoring in the 74th minute. Revitalised by the goal, Druk Star FC made every attempt to bounce back into the game. Their hard work paid off well as Samten Norbu headed in his second goal from a corner.
It was all back to square again as the match entered into its final ten minutes. Both the teams gave their best as a goal would now easily decide the winner of the finals. And yet again, Tenzin Thinley of High Quality scored the crucial goal of the match at the 90th minute.
By then, many believed High quality United had won the game but it was far from over. Druk star equalized yet again and this time it was their skipper Galey Zangpo.
The match went into extra time with both the teams scoring four goals each. In the first half of the extra time, Druk Star FC lost their striker Busayo after receiving two yellow cards. However, that did not have much impact upon the game as the outnumbered team scored two goals to win the Championship.
The match ended in favour of Druk Star FC.
“It was a very exciting and difficult game for both the teams. The opponents were also very tough. And I feel we were a little better than them in terms of tactics. And it is due to our team tactics that we won the match,” the Druk Star FC’s Coach Namgay said.
With this, Druk Star FC, High Quality United FC, BFF Academy A, Druk United FC and Paro United FC has made it to the Bhutan Premiere League. Bhutan Premiere League will be the top domestic league in the country which will begin this month.
