In the primary round of the National Assembly elections, most Bhutanese voted in favour of Druk Phuensum Tshogpa but the People’s Democratic Party performed better than in 2008.
Druk Phuensum Tshogpa won over 33 constituencies, with the majority in eight dzongkhags: Bumthang, Dagana, Lhuentse, Sarpang, Samdrup Jongkhar, Thimphu, Trongsa and Trashi Yantse.
PDP secured the second highest number of votes, followed by Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa and Druk Chirwang Tshogpa. People’s Democratic Party secured a majority in 12 constituencies from Western and Southern parts of Bhutan. PDP, however, did not have any wins in the East.
In Pema Gatshel, DPT won by winning about 75 percent of the total votes. PDP secured 12 percent of the votes, DNT-9 percent and DCT-3 percent.
Voters in Monggar also chose DPT. Of the total votes cast, 56 percent was for DPT, 22 percent for DNT, 18 percent for PDP and 3 percent for DCT.
Gasa, the largest dzongkhag but with the least number of voters, were in favour of DPT but only by a marginal difference with PDP. DNT came next, followed by DCT.
Zhemgang’s choice was DPT, followed by DNT, PDP and DCT, respectively.
In Trashigang, except for Thrimshing Constituency where Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa had the majority, the other four constituencies voted for Druk Phuensum Tshogpa. DPT secured the highest votes in Trashigang, followed by DNT, PDP and DCT.
People’s Democratic Party secured the maximum votes in Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang.
Voters in Haa chose PDP with 60% of the people voting for the party. Druk Phuensum Tshogpa secured about 28 percent of the total vote, followed by Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa and Druk Chirwang Tshogpa.
Samtse was equally divided between DPT and PDP.
Chhukha also voted in favour of the People’s Democratic Party. Druk Phuensum Tshogpa came second, followed by Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa and Druk Chirwang Tshogpa.
DNT won the majority in Phuentshogling, while PDP secured the highest votes in Bongo-Chapchha Constituency.
Voters in Paro were divided between DPT and PDP. In Dokar-Sharpa Constituency, PDP secured the maximum votes followed by DPT. However, in Lamgong–Wangchang Constituency, DPT had the highest votes followed by PDP.
In Tsirang, DPT was chosen by Kilkhorthang –Mendrelgang Constituency while PDP secured the highest votes in Sergithang- Tsirang Toed constituency.
Druk Phuensum Tshogpa gathered most of their votes from Central and Eastern parts of the country. They also secured the highest votes in disparate Southern and Western parts.
Druk Chirwang Tshogpa secured the least number of votes in all the constituencies except in Samtse.
