The Dagana district court sentenced two men in their twenties to nine years and 21 months in prison respectively. One of them is convicted of raping a minor and the other had attempted to rape an elderly woman. The judgments were passed this week.
One of the convicts, a 23 year-year-old man, was sentenced for the rape of a 14-year-old girl. The judgment stated that they first met towards the end of last year through Facebook. The father of the girl reported the relationship to the Police and the convict was arrested. Although the man and the girl admitted that their intimate relationship was consensual, he was convicted since the girl is a minor. As per the Child Care and Protection Act 2011, a minor has no capacity to give legally valid consent.
The other convict, a 25-year-old man, was sentenced for attempting to rape an 85-year-old woman. According to the judgment, the convict entered the woman’s home with intent while on his way to fields earlier in January this year. However, his plan failed as two people came to the rescue of the victim after hearing the victim’s scream for help. The victim sustained minor superficial abrasion, bruises on her left side of her neck among others.
