The BNB Coronation Cup 2023 kicked off today in the capital. 32 teams are participating in the tournament among which six are women’s teams. To mark the opening of the tournament, His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck and Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck’s teams played in the opening matches. The Coronation Cup is resuming after a gap of four years.
The opening match in the men’s category was played between team Phojas and team Outlaws.
In the women’s category, the first match was played between the defending Champions Majas and team Griffin.
This year, the men’s winning team will get a cash prize of Nu 120,000 and the women’s winning team will get a cash prize of Nu 100,000.
“This year, it is very important for us because it’s been held after a long halt. There are lots of crowds gathered also. This itself marks the big proceeding. For us, we stood up as runner up and we are expecting and hoping to give our best this time and win the coronation cup,” said Rabgay, Captain of Team Phojas.
“We just had the first coronation cup game after four years and we are very excited to play again. It is very exciting to see lots of young teams show up and a lot of sponsors supporting basketball now. We were the champions of the last coronation cup and we are very excited about this coronation cup,” said Xumsel Chhodon, Captain of Team Majas.
The Coronation Cup first started in 1995 in the honour of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
The tournament will end on 9th September.
