Legal scholars and experts from nine countries including Bhutan are attending a three-day conference on ‘Public Law, Legal Orders and Governance: Regulating Globalisation in Asia’ in Thimphu. The President of JSW School of Law, Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck graced the opening ceremony.
During the conference, the scholars will explore responses and potential solutions to the challenges of globalisation from the perspectives of several different disciplines, including historical, comparative, ethnographic, theoretical, and normative approaches. Specific attention will be paid to the regulation of labour, the environment, and sustainability, the role of religion, and new forms and understandings of constitutionalism in South and Southeast Asia.
“Bhutan as a small country in Asia we are kind of surrounded by big economy giants and we are kind of impacted by globalisation in many ways So, therefore, similar countries and groups of similar interest should gather together and talk about how we can regulate globalisation and its effect on us, especially in Asia. Bhutan will definitely benefit g from the deliberations,” Sangay Dorjee, the Dean of JSW School of Law, said.
The conference is a part of a broader collaboration among JSW School of Law, the University of Victoria, and four law schools in India, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
“The conference also marks the formal relation between the JSW School of Law and the University of Victoria. We share a lot of common interest, one of which is regulating globalisation in Asia and the first part of the conference is being held in Bhutan. The second part of the conference will be held in Canada next year where all the proceeding of this conference will be finalised. We will then be able to share the outcome of our conference with the public and how we can actually resolve the issues of globalisation impacting countries like Bhutan and other countries in Asia,” Sangay Dorjee added.
At the opening of the conference, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the JSW School of Law and University of Victoria formalising their collaboration and paving the way for future cooperation in the areas of joint research and faculty and student mobility.
