The maintenance and blacktopping of the road between Dagapela and Sunkosh in Dagana is yet to be complete. The works which started in June, 2020 was due for completion in June last year. An extension of five months was given considering the COVID situation and the poor weather conditions.
Works on the 42-kilometre road was tendered out in two parts. The first phase to improve a stretch of 18 kilometres between Sunkosh and Rigsumgang was completed and handed over on time. But the second phase which is between Rigsumgang and Dagapela is still ongoing. Today, out of 24 kilometres works remain on only eight kilometres.
“We have around 30 workers right now. We also have all the materials and machinery, so all the works are going on well,” said Kanjur Wangdi, the site engineer of the Yangchenma Construction Private Ltd. “We begin work early in the morning and carry on till 8 at night. We are hoping to complete the works by January 10.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Roads says they will not be giving any more extensions to the contractor.
“According to the contract, the works were supposed to be finished within 13 months. However, considering the inconveniences, we gave him an extension and he was supposed to complete the works by November 20,” said Arjun Bdr Katwal, an Assistant Engineer with the Department of Roads. “But now for all the extra time that he takes to complete the project, we will levy fines as per the contract agreement.”
The residents are hoping the road is completed soon.
“Driving small cars on this stretch of road is very inconvenient. The road is filled with potholes and it damages the vehicles,” said Kinzang Thinley.
“Travelling through this road is very inconvenient,” said Dhan Bdr Darjee.
“The road between Tashiding and Drujeygang has become very nice now. We are hoping the rest of the road is also completed soon,” said Tshewang Gyaltshen.
The project is being carried out at a cost of almost Nu 60 M.
