Forty nine schools in the country will be developed as central schools in the next four years under the School Reform Programme. Yelchen Central School in Pema Gatshel, the country’s first central school, opens from the next academic year.
Yelchen Central School in Pema Gatshel is located about 31 kilometres away from the Dzongkhag Centre.

Building constructions are complete but works are continuing, to put in place, other infrastructure.
The school will have classes from pre-primary to 12. As a central school, it will provide free boarding and other facilities essential to provide wholesome education.
The government of India is providing Rs.3.4 BN for the School Reform Programme, which was inaugurated by the Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, earlier this month.
