The last Bhutanese stranded in Afghanistan has safely reached Pakistan yesterday. More than ten United Nation’s employees, including the Bhutanese, are currently in Islamabad. He will leave for New York on Wednesday.
According to a source, the UN sent him on a break before redeployment in Afghanistan. He says he may only return to Afghanistan after consulting with his family.
There were three Bhutanese working for the UN in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over the country last month after the US withdrew its troops. Two of them were evacuated to Almaty in Kazakhstan on August 19. They are now working from the UN’s office in Kazakhstan.
