A 37-year-old Bhutanese man is under the custody of Jaigoan police, in an Indian town bordering Phuentshogling, in connection with smuggling of sandalwood into the country.
The Jaigoan police and Sashastra Seema Bal had intercepted him, with the load, on the midnight of January 2 at Dalsingpara, which is about 10 kilometres away from Jaigoan.
Sources say he was carrying sandalwood worth Nu.10.5 MN. They were concealed under layers of bricks and rice bags.
According to the statement of the Bhutanese man, he was supposed to deliver the consignment at Ammochu River in Phuentshogling. He would be then paid Nu.10, 000 for the task.
He, however, has said that he has no idea as to whom it was being delivered.
The case has been registered at the Jaigaon police station.
The police have also seized truck carrying the consignment.
