Shortage of Engineers, Architects, Urban Planners in the country is a longstanding story. In an effort to retain these professionals, the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement introduced an award system, to recognise and reward the professionals.
The first of the award was initiated as the three day National Engineering and Architects Conference ended in Thimphu on Friday. Two masons and two institutes were the recipients of the awards.
Dechen Wangmo, 23, who works as a mason in Tsirang was one of the recipients for her expertise in the construction of buildings in the last 7 years.
Pema Dorji, another mason from Trashigang was recognised for his skills in wood works. In a fast urbanising Bhutan, traditional masons are seen in short supply and are becoming dissociated from the modern concrete dominated constructions. Pema Dorji, was therefore recognised for his efforts in keeping traditional masonry skills alive.
