Within a span of three months from April to June, the number of vehicles, in the country, saw an increase of 1500 as per the recently released second-quarter Info-Comm and Transport Statistics 2019.
The total number of vehicles stand at 103,814 as of June this year, which is an increase from 102,309. The second quarter Info-Comm and Transport statistics covers data on ICT, media, transport and postal services from April to June this year.
As per the statistics, light vehicles category saw the highest increase in the number of vehicles taking the total to nearly 67,000. It is increased by 873 compared to the first quarter. The heavy vehicle too saw an increase to nearly 11,600 from 11,400. At the same time, the number of two-wheelers is increased by nearly 200 compared to the first quarter taking the total to over 11,000. In addition, the number of taxis also increased to nearly one hundred in a span of three months from April to June.
Meanwhile, Thimphu saw the highest number of vehicles registered at 54,000 followed by Phuentsholing with about 35,700.
There were over 200 motor vehicle accidents during April and May this year. According to the report, most of the accidents were due to drink-driving and speeding.
Meanwhile, as per 2019 provisional Bhutan Trade Statistics from January to March, petrol and diesel topped the import commodity list valued at about Nu 2bn. According to the Bhutan Trade Statistics, an increasing number of vehicles is directly proportional to the increasing import of petroleum products.
