About 58 percent of the population in Dagana is Dzongkha literate. They can speak, read, write and understand the National Language. This was revealed during a recent survey conducted by the education sector of Dagana Dzongkhag.
As per the survey presentation made during the recent principal’s conference for Dagana Dzongkhag, Karmaling Gewog tops the Dzongkha literacy rate. About 80 percent of the Gewog’s population can speak, read, write and understand the Dzongkha.
Nichula Gewog, with only 23 percent has the least number of Dzongkha literate in the Dzongkhag.
According to the Assistant Dzongkhag Education Officer, Rinchen Gyeltshen, the survey would help in providing correct information to ensure more and timely support from the education ministry.
However, since not much support was received from the local leaders for the survey this time, all the information may not be accurate. So to improve accurate and better monitoring of the survey, the Dzongkhag education sector is looking at conducting consultative meetings with local leaders.
No expenses were incurred for the survey. The principals and non-formal instructors carried out the survey by themselves in their respective communities.
The survey was carried among the population aged 15 years and above in all the 11 Gewogs of the Dzongkhag.
