In Trashigang, some elderly people, especially those without relatives, have found their safe haven at Karma Thegsum Dechenling Monastery in Khaling Gewog. The monastery has been providing shelter and food for older adults for more than six years.
The monastery, located at Barshong, currently provides care and support to around 35 elderly people wishing to devote their time to religious activities.
The monastery is privately owned by Karma Mijur Tenpai Gyeltshen Jigme Gocha, popularly known as Zuri Trulku.
Their day begins following the monks at the monastery, chanting prayers. They spend most of their time attending rituals, circumambulating, and offering butter lamps.
Coming from various places in the east, they are provided a structure to live within the monastery premises. Although a few of them do not have relatives, some choose to live on their own at the monastery despite having children to look after them.
Besides accommodation, the monastery provides them with food as well.
“All my children are grown up, and if I stayed in the village, I would not be able to do anything. It felt like I was wasting my life. I know that one day I will die, so I came here to devote the rest of my life to religious activities. Rinpoche has provided us with a home, clothing, and food, so I am happy here,” said Karchung, Jamkhar Gewog, Tashi Yangtse.
“I do not have any children, and I can live here without worrying about anything. I have a toilet inside the room, with both hot and cold water available at my convenience. There is power, and we don’t have to pay for electricity. They even provide vehicle services for medical checkups,” said Bumpa Dema, Ghaling, Shongphu Gewog, Trashigang.
“I have been living here for more than five years now. Rinpoche has provided everything for us, starting from clothing, blanket and food. We do not have to worry here,” said Chedon, Barshong, Khaling Gewog, Trashigang.
To stay physically active, they also have access to an outdoor gym where they can exercise and maintain their health.
A Lam said they introduced these facilities after noticing an increasing number of elderly people living near the monastery in temporary shelters.
A few monks have also been assigned to manage and assist the elderly people.
For many of these elderly residents, Karma Thegsum Dechenling Monastery is more than just a place of worship; it is a home filled with peace, purpose, and compassion. As they spend their twilight years in prayer and community, the monastery continues to shine as a beacon of care and devotion.
