The Bhutan Tendrel Party has fielded former councillor Tashi Samdrup for the upcoming Nubi-Tangsibji by-election. He will be up against People’s Democratic Party’s Phuntsho Dendup. Both candidates are once again vying for the post on the back of unsuccessful campaigns in the last parliamentary elections. Voters will head to the polls once again on 4th September.
53-year-old Tashi Samdrup will represent the Opposition Party, Bhutan Tendrel Party. Former National Council member, Tashi Samdrup, holds a Master of Science in Mountain Forestry from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Austria. He was a candidate for the Druk Thuendrel Tshogpa in the last parliamentary elections.
And 40-year-old Phuntsho Dendup is the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialisation in finance from the Gedu College of Business Studies. Before joining the People’s Democratic Party in 2018, he worked as the branch manager of BDBL in Trongsa.
According to the election commission, the parties should file their nominations by Saturday. The campaign period will begin on Sunday and will end on the morning of 2nd September which is 48 hours before polls open.
The public debate will be organised on 14th August.
The national assembly seat for Nubi-Tangsibji constituency in Trongsa became vacant following the resignation of Opposition Party’s MP, Tashi Dorji.
There are over 4,800 registered voters in the constituency.
Nubi-Tangsibji constituency presents a unique trend, it has been represented twice by the ruling and twice by the opposition parties. Therefore, this by-election is expected to draw close attention from both sides.
