Gelegphu town now has 13 CCTV installed in the core area of the Thromde. The cameras are to deter criminal activities and assist the police to provide better security and safety to individuals.
Local residents welcomed the idea of installing cameras in the town.
“Frequent robbery takes place in the core town area in Gelegphu. With CCTV cameras, the crime rate might reduce. Though it may not be possible to apprehend the miscreants on the spot but it might discourage them to commit the crime,” said Gelegphu’s resident, Birmaya Tamang.
Police said it will also help them respond swiftly during emergencies and keep an eye on traffic rules violators.
Officials are optimistic that video footages coulc also stop illegal dumping of waste and promote justice through credible prosecution.
