DNT alleges education minister of illegal campaigning

Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) has lodged a complaint against the Education Minister Norbu Wangchuk for illegal campaigning during his constituency visit.

The letter alleges that the minister’s ongoing tour in his constituency of Kanglung-Samkhar-Udzorong in Trashigang is more of a preparation for the upcoming National Assembly elections.

The complaint letter was submitted to the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) on July 13.

In it, the DNT alleges the education minister for abuse of power and conducting illegal campaigning in his constituency.

The letter states, “In the ongoing familiarisation tour, all other political parties are making do with bare minimum with regards to resources. At such time, Lyonpo is seen using the government resources and personnel to pursue his political agenda”.

The letter also mentions that the DNT party workers observed the minister engaging in the political activity, which includes conducting meeting in his constituency and nominating the PDP party coordinators.

The party has submitted a photograph of the minister with 17 party coordinators in Udzorong Gewog.

“Besides travelling in government  pool vehicle and using accompanying staff from the head quarters and local government officials  to facilitate his political activities, Lyonpo has also been hosting meals for the people and wooing their support,” the letter further stated.

The DNT has also claimed through the letter that this is not the first time the minister has misused his official status to promote the party and its candidates.

The party has submitted a copy of the letter to the Anti Corruption Commission as well. The ECB officials were not available for the comment.
