BAFRA comes up with model meat shop to improve safety standards

Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances is a concern to many. Towards ensuring food safety in the country, Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) initiated its first-ever model meat shop in Thimphu, yesterday.

The meat shop has facilities such as air conditions, exhaust fans, rod for hanging meet and double door among others. These facilities will enhance providing quality and safety of meat products to the customers.

“We are not saying the existing meat shops do not meet the requirement of BAFRA. But this model meat shop is more standard and will be an example to other meat shops,” said Office In-charge of BAFRA, Kaling Dorji, adding that they hope other meat shops will follow suit.

Despite improvement of cleanliness and safety in butchery shops, BAFRA officials said they will monitor the shops on daily basis. There are 56 meat shops in the capital.
