sherubtse-doubledegreeSherubtse College plans to get rid of almost all the double degree courses in next two years. The double degree courses will be offered as separate degree. Only one double degree course, English-Dzongkha is expected to be retained.

Sherubtse College first dropped five double degree courses in 2013. The college is now left with seven double degree courses including two courses just started four years ago.

The courses were introduced eight years back to improve relevance for learners through diversification of academic programmes.

“We have conducted analysis with stakeholder agencies where our graduates are employed. We also conducted tracer studies with our graduates. One of the main findings from these studies was that combination degrees are not really popular in terms of employment,” said the Dean of Academic Affairs with Sherubtse College, Dr. Tenzin Wangchuk.

He also said there are indications that combination degree awards are not accepted for postgraduate studies outside.

If the plans are implemented, it is expected to come at a cost of having to recruit more human resources.

The college says English-Dzongkha is expected to remain because of its demand in the job market.

The college will drop double degree courses for science and come up with separate courses from next year.

The college intends to drop the remaining courses the following year. About 40 students are likely to be enrolled in each course.

The change will not affect the intake of students, the college said.

The college is currently engaged in series of discussions and in process of reviewing its plans.
