Bhutan Lottery closed

Following the media reports on the Bhutan Lottery scam, the Bhutan Lottery has now been closed.

A news release form the cabinet secretariat says it is not being closed because any official has been found guilty of involvement in the scam. It says the closure is in the interest of the country.

Bhutan Lottery, the sole government agency responsible for lottery business in the country was in operation since 1987.  It was one of the highest revenue generators bringing in more than Nu.210 million every year.

The closure also follows an audit observation by the Royal Audit Authority which pointed out 25 lapses. Most of the lapses were clarified by the Finance Ministry.

Earlier, the Prime Minister said lottery is unethical and not in conformity with the GNH values. The government views lottery as gambling.

The news release from the cabinet secretariat says lottery is a complex business in which the government or the people of Bhutan have no control over in a foreign soil.

The Directorate of Lottery has 15 staff. The government says they will be placed in relevant sectors.
