International footballers are again showing interest to play for seven local clubs in the country. In the past few years, not many international players were keen to play for Bhutan’s local clubs.
Yanmar Thimphu Premier League, which began on Saturday, has are seven international players from India, Japan, Nigeria, and Gambia playing for three local clubs. Two more players from Nigeria are set to join the Druk Stars FC soon.
Druk United Football Club has hired four international players, Thimphu Football Club has hired two and Tertons Football Club, one.
Speaking to BBS, Khaidem Vicky Meitei from India and currently playing for Druk United FC said Bhutanese players have got skills and speed. “They just need to practice more on their skills.”
Ousman Jeng from Gambia, playing for Thimphu FC said football in Bhutan has come up. “Some of the players lack confidence but they are talented.”
Japanese footballer, Dan Ito also playing for Thimphu FC said Bhutanese players are good physically but they lack technique. “If the players are taught more technique they can improve a lot”.
The clubs that have hired international players say it is a good opportunity for the Bhutanese players to get some experience and knowledge from the international players.
“Players from outside make a huge difference during a match,” said Tertons FC Club Owner, Tshering Phuntsho. He said whenever there is an international player on the field; Bhutanese players track that particular player closely which in turn helps them pick up techniques.
The Technical Director, Druk United FC, Dinesh Chhetri said the players, they have brought from India, are much more experienced than Bhutanese players. “They have played many games outside.” He said Bhutanese players can learn from their experiences.
Of the seven football clubs participating in the league, Thimphu City FC, Drukpol FC and Dzongree FC do not have international players.
