AwarenessCampaign-H5N1The officials of the livestock department, health and BAFRA carried out an awareness campaign at Chuzargang gewog after the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was detected in Sarpang dzongkhag.

The disease was first detected in Namkhaling and then in Pelrithang and Chuzargang within this month.

Birds in places where the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was detected showed the symptoms a month ago. However people informed the concerned authorities only a month later.

Dr. J B Gurung from the Department of Livestock urged the people to inform the concerned authorities immediately after they see the symptoms in the birds. This, he said, will help to prevent the disease from spreading.

He informed the people that they can call the toll free number 124.

The officials told the people that the disease could spread to the people and that could prove fatal.

The people were also educated on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the poultry farms.

The first case of bird flu in the country was detected at Rinchending in Phuentsholing in 2010. This year apart from Sarpang dzongkhag, it has also been detected in Lhamoizingkha.
