Portion of Kangpar GC road in need of improvement

More than three years on, since the Gewog Centre Road of Kangpar Gewog in Trashigang was damaged by heavy rains, the road still remains in dire condition. The poor state of the road has become dangerous for travellers, especially during the summer. Incessant rainfall in 2020 caused a landslide which damaged a portion of the GC road in Kangpar.

The 100-metre stretch at Peydung along the Kangpar Gewog Centre Road was damaged by a landslide in July 2020.

Although the Gewog administration deployed machines several times to improve the road, the condition becomes bad during the monsoon.

Recently, a vehicle was also damaged due to falling boulders. There were also incidences of vehicle accidents and casualties caused by the poor condition of the road.

Although vehicles can travel on the road during the winter, it becomes unpassable during the rainy season.

So, the residents use an alternative route, the Baydingphu village farm road during monsoon. The Gewog improved the Baydingphu farm road with a base course in the last financial year.

We have an alternative route however it takes more time. The distance is shorter when we use the Kangpar Gewog Centre road. But the road is risky during monsoon. There are chances of vehicles getting buried and a few people even lost their lives. We would be grateful if a wall could be constructed,” said Sonam Tobgay, a resident from Zordung village.

“People are facing problems when they are sick. When we are referred to Riserboo, Trashigang and Monggar hospitals, we face problems due to the falling boulders. And when we use the alternative road, it costs us more,” said Dorji Wangzom, a resident from Kangpar village.

The Gewog administration constructed a Chorten as a religious intervention.

The Gewog has also proposed walls along the stretch to the finance ministry through the district administration.

“We have proposed improvement of the road under the national project,” said Pema Wangchen, Kangpar Mangmi.

The Gewog Centre road which is around 38 kilometres long benefits almost 500 households of Kangpar Gewog.
