The United Nations in Bhutan has rededicated its commitment and continued support to the government and people of Bhutan. It was highlighted today during the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. Ministers, Opposition Leader, Members of the Parliament, UN representatives and government officials were present during the event in Thimphu.

The world today and its realities are remarkably different from what it was 75 years ago. And on this day, the 24th of October, the UN Charter came into force.

“Our association with the United Nations has afforded us a valuable platform to advance our national interest and priorities. In areas such as culture, environment, socio-economic development and above all happiness as a parameter to guide socio-economic development internationally,” said Wangchuk Namgyel, the Speaker of the National Assembly.

“The 26 UN agencies serving Bhutan and its people, we are privileged. We the UN are here to serve. The government’s agenda and priorities are our priorities. The SDGs provide a shared global vision for sustainable development. We are indeed fortunate to serve in the country whose own philosophy of Gross National Happiness is such a great partner for the SDGs,” said Gerald Daly, the Resident Coordinator for UN Bhutan.

Bhutan became a member of the United Nations in 1971, marking 50 years next year.
