Trashi Yangtse District Court sentenced a 46-year-old Boomdeling gup Mani Wangda to 12 years in prison today for rape of a child above the age of twelve years.

Earlier the Office of the Attorney General requested the court to direct the accused to pay compensation to the victim. According to the judgement, however, the father of the victim declined any compensation from the convict in the welfare for the convict’s wife and children.

As per the judgement, the incident happened while the victim’s parents were away for cordyceps collection earlier last month. After knowing the absence of the victim’s parents, the convict frequently called the victim and bought a new mobile phone at the cost of more than Nu 10,000. The parents informed the police after knowing about the incident. The convict confessed to the crime which was further confirmed from the medical report of the victim. He was elected as a Gup in 2016 during the second Local Government Election and a father of five.

However, he is allowed to appeal to the higher court within ten working days if not satisfied with the judgment passed by the district court.
