Man faces court for causing false alarm

A 34-year-old man is being tried at the Tsirang District Court on the suspicion of making a false alarm.

The man played with firecrackers on the evening of September 13, which coincided with the no-campaign period for the Primary Round of Third National Assembly elections.

The sound of the firecrackers alarmed the neighbors and caused them to become suspicious. The village Tshogpa immediately called police, resulting in his arrest.

The police forwarded the case to the court on October 10.

The man, in his statement to the police, had said his friends gave him the firecrackers. It was meant to be used for chasing away monkeys attacking his crops.

But he decided to play with them that evening just for amusement.

The court is expected to come out with its judgment this week.

According to the Penal Code of Bhutan, a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of false alarm if the defendant circulates a report or warning of an impending or other catastrophe knowing that the report or warning is false or baseless and that it is likely to cause public inconvenience or alarm.

The offence of false alarm is graded a petty misdemeanor.
