Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck met with the people of Chhoekhor Gewog and the Chamkhar business community in Bumthang, today. Her Majesty interacted with the people and emphasised on prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.
Her Majesty also spoke on reproductive health, domestic violence and various other social issues. Her Majesty the Queen Mother is the President and the Founder of RENEW, a non-profit organisation, meant to empower vulnerable women.
Her Majesty is also the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund.
As part of the advocacy programme, officials from the RENEW, the UNFPA and Bumthang district medical officer, held a question-answer session with the people on sexually transmitted diseases and other social issues.
RENEW will soon establish a safe-house that will provide shelter to the victims of domestic violence and any gender-based violence like rape and incest. RENEW was established in 2004, and till date, it has helped over 1500 families.
