State Mining Corporation formally handed over to DHI

State Mining Corporation formally handed over to DHIState Mining Corporation, a new player in the mining field, was officially handed over to the Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), today.

The economic affairs minister, Norbu Wangchuk, handed over the company’s incorporation certificate to the DHI’s Chairman, Dasho Sangay Khandu.

The company will operate under Druk Holding and Investments. With the State Mining Corporation joining the business, the contribution from the mining sector to the country’s GDP is expected to increase.

The contribution from the mining sector is only about 2.5 percent.

Dasho Sangay Khandu said the mines and minerals will not be sold without value addition. However, he said there is a need for some polices in place.

Lyonpo Norbu Wangchuk said the policies will be put in place soon.

He also said the State Mining Corporation will help the country achieve self reliance.

Lyonpo said if mining is owned by the state, communities will cooperate better, which otherwise is a challenge, faced by the private sectors, at the moment.

During the event, five quarry sites were handed over to the SMC to supply materials to Khologchhu hydropower project.
