Return of the Dragon’s Gift

Oct 28, 2010

The sacred artifacts of Bhutan returned home, yesterday, after touring the world for more than two years. The artifacts belonging to 36 Lhakhangs and Dzongs left the country in November 2007 for the, “Dragon’s Gift: the sacred arts of Bhutan”, exhibition.

More than 100 artifacts including statues and thangkas were displayed during the exhibition, which travelled from Honolulu, to New York, Germany, Paris and San Francisco.

The exhibition concluded on 17th October in Zurich, Switzerland with the demolition of the Sand Mandala and Tashi Moenlam.

While the artifacts were abroad, two monks accompanied the artifacts to offer prayers every day.

The exhibition will be put up at the Royal Academy of Performing Arts in Thimphu on 11th November. It will then move to Trongsa and Trashigang before the artifacts are handed over to the respective lhakhangs and dzongs.

The exhibition was prepared and organised by the Honolulu Academy of Arts in Hawaii in co-operation with the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Central Monastic Body.
