Hostel congestion in Samcholing Central School in Trongsa

With an increased number of students opting Arts stream, the girls’ hostel of Samcholing Central School in Trongsa is congested this year. Students said it has been difficult to study in a crowded room. Samcholing Central School has 426 students.

According to students, there is limited space left to walk freely in the rooms. Initially, each room was designed to accommodate some 20 students. However, for now, each room accommodates some 30 students.

“It is suffocating to stay in a crowded room. It is more challenging while studying,” said Ugyen Wangmo, a student.

“If the room is not crowded, it will be easier for us to study. We would be very grateful if there is a certain distance between the beds whereby we can study,” said Phurpa Choden, another student.

Meanwhile, as per the district education sector, the stream segregation for the three high schools was initiated last year which led to the increased number of students. The three high schools include Tshangkha Central School,  Sherabling Central School and Samcholing Central School.

“We expected the number of boarding students to be similar to last year. However, the results of the science stream were poor this time. And that led to the increased number of students here,” said Pemba T Gyeltshen, the Chief District Education Officer.

And the district education sector has no plan to construct a hostel. However, beginning next year, the class VIII passed students of Langthil Lower Secondary School would be sent to Sherabling Central School instead of Samcholing Central School.

Currently, the District Education sector is also facilitating the placement of present class VII, VIII and IX students to other schools in the district in consultation with the parents. So far, around five students were enrolled in Sherabling Central School.
