Bhutanese youth opt for welding works, Zhemgang

Labour shortage has been a challenge for the construction sector due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in Zhemgang, Bhutanese youth are seen taking up the welding works. Although the job has been tiring work, they said they can earn their living through the profession. Earlier, the foreign labourers have been doing the welding works in Zhemgang. 

Some parents disappointed with Karma Academy for charging additional fees for the extended academic year

Some 60 parents of students studying at Karma Academy in Paro expressed disappointment with the school charging an additional fee. The school had levied fees for an additional two and a half months due to the extension of the academic year 2020. They have put up a complaint against the school to the Office of Consumer Protection.

Farm road expected to boost agriculture in Woongborang, Pema Gatshel

From this winter, villagers of Woongborang chiwog in Pema Gatshel are expected to transport their farm produce more conveniently. This is because the chiwog will be connected with a farm road by October this year. For now, the farmers have to carry the produce on their back or on horseback.

Closure of sale outlet at the JDWNRH affecting the livelihood of street vendors

The lockdown came down harshly on street vendors, as it did for many other workers in the country's informal sector. One such example is the street hawkers selling tea and snacks at the sale outlet near the national referral hospital in Thimphu. A year has passed already and the outlet still remains closed affecting the livelihood of the street hawkers.

Community Engagement Platform (Nangzom) proving effective

For many villagers, the Chiwog Zomdu (meeting) is time-consuming and most of the time disorganised whereby few influential people dominate the discussion. However, to tackle such problems, the Department of Local Governance (DLG) initiated a pilot Community Engagement Platform (CEP) also know as Nangzom in six gewogs in three Dzongkhags. The group consists of few people and has encouraged community participation and accurate and timely information sharing. According to the department, the pilot project was found effective which ended this month.

Students among the top list of drug abuse

Apart from unemployed youth, students continue to be one of the most drug users in the country. According to the records maintained with the Bhutan Narcotics Control Authority (BNCA), there were more than 200 students who were caught abusing drugs last year.

Home Minister appeals to Supreme Court against the Larger Bench’s ruling

Home Minister Sherab Gyeltshen along with four officials of the Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan Limited has appealed to the Supreme Court today. They are appealing to the Supreme Court after the Larger Bench of the High Court, on March 18, affirmed the High Court's judgment convicting them for a false vehicle insurance claim.

Farmers of Sergithang Gewog expect good income from early green chilli

Farmers of Sergithang gewog in Tsirang are expecting a good income from the green chilies that they harvested recently. This year, they have managed to harvest the local green chilies, two weeks earlier than last year. This is the second time that Tsirang Dzongkhag has been able to produce early Bhutanese green chilies since the commencement of the early chili cultivation project, last year.

Overwhelming response to ginger buyback in Dorokha, Samtse

The government’s ginger buyback scheme has received an overwhelming response from the farmers in Dorokha under Samtse. Farmers from the dungkhag sold over 82 tonnes, equivalent to six truckloads of ginger during the buyback, which lasted four days. The government initiated the buyback scheme considering the poor market situation for the product due to the pandemic.

Lack of tenants in Tagtse Community in Trongsa

House owners residing near the College of Language and Culture Studies (CLCS) in Trongsa are worried over the lack of tenants in the community. According to the residents, this was due to the university's decision to accommodate all college students inside the college campus in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, other than a few teachers, day scholars of the university were the main tenants for the house owners residing in the vicinity of the college campus.
