Only six women out of 142 candidates

If the number of women turning up for the Functional Literacy rate is any indication, Bhutan’s local government is set to remain a male domain. For instance in Phuentsholing as our correspondent Dechen Wangmo finds out, of the 142 registered local leader aspirants from six Geogs under Chhukha Dzongkhag, only 8 were women.

Bhutan to build a temple and guest house in Rajgir

Meeting with the Chief Minister of Bihar, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y. Thinley requested the Bihar government to give a plot of land in Rajgir, about 3 acres, to build a temple, an area for meditation and a rest house for Bhutanese. The Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar expressed an assurance and said that they have already asked designated officials to identify the land.

Over 1,300 university graduates sit for preliminary exam

In order to ensure a minimum standard required of a candidate to appear for the Bhutan Civil Service Examination (BSCE) the preliminary examination for the university graduates was conducted. Over 1,300 university graduates registered for the BCSE for this year, which is slated to be held in November.

A new crop disease in Dagana

A disease called Turcicum has been affecting maize crop in Dagana Dzongkhag. It has so far spread to Dorona, Goshi, Khebisa and Dujeygang Geogs. Turcium affects the leaves and eventually the husk. The maize disease has been affecting their maize crops since two years ago.

Government gives go-ahead, ECB doubtful

The Local Government (LG) election for Thromde Tshogde Tshogpa may take-off soon for Class A Thromdes, Class A Thromdes are Thimphu, Samdrup Jongkhar, Phuentsholing and Gelephu. The government gave the go ahead for the election after they issued the draft delimitation plan for these places.

A new rule to simplify Dzongkha

Most people find writing Dzongkhag more difficult than speaking. The rule for writing, which is mostly derived from “Choeked”, is what is complicating. With a mission to promote the National Language, the Dzongkha Development Commission (DDC), is coming up with a simplified rule inbuilt in the Dzongkha language system for the convenience of the users.

Like any fashionable dress, Bhutanese national dress for women- the Kira is also driven by comforts and modernisation. With the theme, ‘the evolution of Kira-changing fashions’, the textile museum in Thimphu displayed a wide range of Kira designs on Friday.

What is of use if not maintained?

Farm roads are built to ease rural inconveniences and uplift problems such as long walking hours to schools, markets and health centres. Therefore, it is built with an aim to improve the economic status of the rural population. But what use of the farm roads, if they are not maintained?
