New tax reform adopted despite stern opposition

The National Assembly yesterday adopted the National Budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011, although the two opposition members made stern opposition against the revised taxation policies.

Biggest Thongdroel consecrated

His Holiness the Je Khenpo consecrated the Guru Thongdroel at the Tashichhodzong earlier this morning. The Thondroel, measuring 108 by 85 feet, will be the biggest Thongdroel in the country.

Fuel and LPG become costlier

The price of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG will increase from tomorrow. A litre of petrol will cost Nu. 47.69. That is an increase of Nu. 3.5.

Foreign land ownership not necessary: NC

The Economic Affairs Committee of the National Council have reviewed that it is not necessary to allow foreign land ownership to meet Bhutan’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Policy objectives. One of the Committee members remarked that unlike manufacturing and industrial sectors where FDI companies seek to own land, attracting FDI in the service sector is not determined by the land ownership aspect.

NA decides to increase the National Work Force wage rate

With much deliberation, the National Assembly today decided to increase the wage rate of the National Work Force. The issue was also discussed in the National Council earlier this month.

4 killed in an accident

Three men and a woman were killed on the spot when the WagonR taxi they were travelling in fell 1,100 ft below the road. The accident occurred at Lumi-tsawa in Punakha while they were travelling from Lobesa to Thimphu.

Reports on Bhutanese student molestation not true

With regard to the reports by the Indian media that a 14-year-old Bhutanese girl studying in Kodaikanal Public School in Chennai was molested by a faculty member, the Royal Bhutan Embassy in New Delhi has carried out an investigation on the case. According to the release from the Embassy there are no Bhutanese students studying in Kodaikanal Public School.
