36-year-old man in custody for the alleged rape of a 23-year-old woman, Thimphu

Thimphu police detained a 36-year-old man for the alleged rape of a 23-year-old woman in Thimphu recently. He was arrested after the woman reported the incident to the police.

A man in custody for alleged rape of a minor, Panbang

A man in his early 20s is in custody for the alleged rape of a minor in Panbang under Zhemgang. The 16-year-old girl, a student in one of the schools in Panbang, is now six months pregnant. The suspect was apprehended earlier this month.

Larger Bench dismisses the anaesthetic technician’s appeal case

The Larger Bench of the High Court dismissed the appeal case of the National Referral Hospital’s anaesthetic technician convicted of the rape of a married woman and official misconduct. The court affirmed the judgment passed by the High Court which has sentenced him to five years in prison. The convict was also ordered to pay Nu 22,500 to the victim as compensation. The Larger Bench dismissed the appeal as per the Civil and Criminal Procedure Code of Bhutan, this week.

Police detain a murder suspect- Babesa murder case

The Thimphu Police arrested a suspect who allegedly murdered a 38-year-old man in Babesa, yesterday. He was arrested from Khariphu at around 11:30 PM.

Court sentences a 74-year-old man to more than three months in prison for circulating intimate videos

The Thimphu District Court sentenced a 74-year-old man to three months and four nights in prison for harassment as per section 462 of the Penal Code of Bhutan. The offence of harassment is a petty misdemeanour. The man, Sonam Wangdi, had circulated intimate videos of himself with a woman on social media last year.

Trial Advocacy Training for Police Prosecutors

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prosecutors of the Office of the Attorney General could not reach the districts to prosecute cases. So, the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) was given the power of attorney to prosecute. And this has come as a challenge for them. However, to ease those challenges, Bhutan National Legal Institute is conducting training on trial advocacy for police prosecutors in Haa since Monday.

Battery, one of the leading crimes in Thimphu

The battery continues to be one of the leading crimes in Thimphu. According to the Police, almost 250 battery cases were recorded last year. However, compared to the previous years, it has decreased in 2020. The decrease, according to the Police is due to intensive patrolling.

A 30-year-old man sentenced to 11 years for voluntary manslaughter, Trongsa

The Trongsa District Court sentenced a 30-year-old man from Phuntshothang Gewog under Samdrup Jongkhar to 11 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. He was found guilty of two counts of battery, criminal attempt to escape from lawful custody and voluntary manslaughter. The court passed the judgment recently.

A 36-year-old man sentenced to five years in prison for trafficking hashish, Monggar

The Monggar District Court sentenced a 36-year-old man from Balam Gewog in Monggar to five years in prison for the illicit trafficking of hashish. The judgment was passed yesterday.
